This would be my solution as well. I think I have your same mattress! I need a step ladder to get into bed. I have a plain cotton bedspread that I got from Vermont Country Store that I use. Couldn't find anything else that had a long enough drape to the sides to come down the the side rails of the bed. And it was pretty cheap to boot. Very thin so wouldn't add lots of weight either.
