I do make up the quilt kits when I buy a pattern I know I want to make right away. I even try and put the backing in there too. I keep them separate from the rest of the fabrics so I don't use it for something else. I have made the mistake of grabbing a piece for another project and then I can't find a good alternative when I go to make the quilt. Live and learn, I guess. Then sometimes I can't find one or two of the fabrics for a while so they sit there. (I don't like this part.) When the batting is on sale, I buy all the ones I have planned. Everything right there... love that.
