I also have made up my own quilt kits over the past few years. They will be all ready when I am ready to begin them.

After driving myself crazy looking for fabric to go with a particular quilt I want to make, I decided that I would put the fabrics I want to use in a zip lock bag, sometimes the extra large bags I can sometimes find, along with the magazine or pattern together. Then when I get ready to make a project, I don't have to go searching through my stash for the right fabrics. I'm nearly finished making a twin size quilt for our DGD Zoe for her 3rd birthday, however, since her birthday party is Sat., and I haven't finished sewing the appliques down using the raw edge applique method, I'd rather not rush it. This was one quilt where I'd put the fabrics together, however, the quilt pattern went missing. Thankfully McCall's had a bonus pattern on their web site, so I improvised some of the appliques. I've been really trying to make up these kits with the magazine so I don't waste hours trying to find the patterns to go with the fabric. Plus, this quilt I'm using fabrics from my stash and don't want to buy any more fabric for it, unless I don't have enough fabric for a backing, but it's nice to know that the quilt top is all from my stash. I'll try to post the quilt when it's finished, as it's darling, IMHO, as I'd like to share it with all of you.

Nope. I often can't even make myself cut out one whole quilt before I start sewing. I might cut the center of a quilt and then have to have it fully assembled before I can even begin to decide on borders. Often, I don't know how big it's going to be until it's closer to being done. I guess I enjoy the process more as it just evolves. Sometimes the whole thing stalls farther down the line and winds up as a partially done "kit" for awhile. I definitely don't know what I might want to do next time, and once it's cut it would feel like too much of a commitment. Uncut fabric has a lot more potential, and I like it that way.

I do this all the time. Either a pattern or fabric will start me collecting until I have enough material to make the quilt. I have many small wash baskets that stack real nice and I put collected fabrics together for the project with the pattern on top. I check off each fabric in the pattern as it goes into the basket. When I have everything I need I either make the quilt or put it in the to do pile.

I also tie groups of fabric together for particular projects with selvages I save for that purpose. I tuck the pattern right on top so I know what it is going to be used in.
peace

That sounds like an incredible and highly organized idea... so I know I never would get it done! LOL...

I just started doing this as well. It really is time to start using up my stash. Now that being said, sometimes it is necessary to buy fabrics to make it all work. But yes making kits is a good idea.

I've made my own kits for a while. I usually don't cut the fabric until ready to actually do that quilt. Then, if I change my mind, I still have nice fabric pieces to work with.
