A vintage singer 201 or 15 won't cost you more than $100 or so and they have fairly large throats.
I have both machines. FMQ with the 201(8") is difficult for me, I don't get nice looking stitches on the back, great for straight line quilting though. The Singer 15(7.5") is better for FMQ, it does a much better job. The feed dogs drop on both machines.
