the extra cost is simple economics. think of the ship as being charged per foot. a single person is given the same amount of feet, or room , as 2 people. the price charged is based on the amount of sellable space, not really the number of people. the cruise line would go bankrupt if they sold all double rooms at singles cost. they can't just take a smaller boat, so they have to charge for the amount of space you are using.
