Hey Reb, lol! I was about to respond that I didn't know what you meant by quilting the mortar, but duh! It just clicked as I was typing. That's a neat idea, sort of like a thread painting thing?

There was a link posted today in the Quilts made using vintage machines thread that may help me accomplish this look: http://lucysquilts.blogspot.ca/2009/...im-quilts.html

Both the style and the method! I just have to think it through some more.

I managed to get the block designed in EQ, but I can't seem to play nice with the custom layout. It won't let me shift-drag the block to the quilt. I will play some more and figure out what I'm doing wrong, but not until tomorrow now. There's a good storm coming and I prefer my computer to not act as a lightning rod.

Tomorrow, I'll also try to pull some fabrics to audition. I figured out how that works in EQ.

ETA: This is what I came up with for the block. It's 12x10, but I'm having trouble visualizing how to do the seams if I need to "rotate" blocks and make them fit together. I think this becomes a sort of Y seam??
