There is really only a few stitches to learn in crochet. Everything is just a variation on those stitches. The easiest patterns to read are the ones which are drawn like charts. Try to get a pattern book with the diagrams in it and you may be less frustrated in understanding/ reading the patterns. American and English instructions have different terminology so make sure you stick to one or the other whilst you are learning. I could crochet at 7 years of age, so that's how easy it is.
