You do not have to remove a tension to rebuild one. I recommend not pulling it out if you don't need to put it on another machine. I have a machine that someone didn't get the memo about the set screw - the little canister that holds it all was broken and we had to drill it out - the machine is a terrible mess. Maybe also be unusable. Some of those little canisters are made of real junky metal.
