I also draw the line corner to corner and the larger squares I pin so they won't shift. Sometimes I only trim the back triangle of the corner piece and leave the large square intact. It helps sew the squares together straight.
I do this too -- draw the line. For small squares, I usually trim all the back pieces because of the bult, but for the larger pieces, I trim the small piece, but not the piece from the original, large square.
