Well, if knew the difference between a hexagon and an octagon, that might be better. You can get an octagon from this (8-sided block), not a hexie. Octagons are harder to set - you have to use squares between them because they don't fit into a solid pattern like hexagons do. But here's my attempt at an octagon from this - like I said, just replace the corner squares with triangles instead. Then you can set them with the flat sides together, and on-point squares to fill the spaces. Or set with the angled sides together and fill with smaller squares.
