A small to medium binder clip clipped on the thread spool works for me. Use the cone stand and run the thread through the binder "handles."
I like your set up with the binder clip. I have mine running through a cut off piece of plastic straw scotch taped to my FW. Your idea eliminates the scotch tape. Thanks.
