All the 108" backing fabric that I have bought has been the same quality and density as the topping fabrics. Perhaps that particular bolt was like that, never heard anyone say that about 108" backings. I buy mine from Thousands of Bolts and they are name brands (Hoffman, South Seas, etc.). I usually pay about $9.95 to $13.95/yd for these. Best price I have seen and good selection.
