I just came from our lqs and choosing fabrics for a new project, where I was told the backing fabric I had chosen for the quilt top (I didn't realize it was a wide backing, I just liked the fabric) is more loosely woven than the fabrics which are not wide backing fabrics. The sales lady discouraged me from mixing that particular fabric in my piecing of the top because it would wear faster than all the other fabrics in the top. I took her advice, put that bolt back and made another selection. I never knew that backing fabrics are more loosely woven. She said it's to make handquilting easier. Always learning....So you may want to carefully check yours out.
i have to agree. I bought a lovely Moda floral 108 inch backing and it is more loosely woven. I haven't used it yet so will have to see how I like it.

I think it depends. All that I have purchased has been a tighter weave like the fabric for the top. That said, I have seen some that is "flimsy". The wear of a quilt, it seems to me, would be the back as that is where the friction would be from having it on a bed and using it. Why, then, would you want flimsier fabric on the back to wear and abrade much quicker? But then, I have seen "flimsy" fabric for the top as well and I don't buy it. At least I hope my theory is mostly correct. I have used some beautiful batik that was purchased for the back of one quilt in the front of another.
