I really don't understand when people say this. I will say that even though I don't particularly care for my 8900, I've never once had it "eat" fabric when piecing. I've sewn seams as narrow as 1/8" without a problem. I pieced for ages on a 7 mm - had no idea I should have had problems with it "eating" fabric.
