Lucy, I have to completely agree with you about the FMQ stitches too close to the edge making it very difficult to hem stitch the back of the binding down. When you're trying to hide those little stitches, it's hard to avoid machined stitches, and it can cause you to mistakenly go through to the front. I try to stay about 1/2 inch from the edge. It just makes it so much easier.
And what's really annoying is when you don't catch it right away, do all these nice, neat little stitches, flip it over and there's your binding thread on the quilt top, and it's always in a contrasting color when you mess up and have it show through. Always
