If you have loops on the bottom it is an issue with the top thread so concentrate there first. All suggestions are good. Also check that you have your needle inserted correctly. Start from scratch and do some practice. Hopefully it will work itself out. What type of Singer to you have? That can help us be more specific if you are still having problems. You don't need a new machine to be able to do quilting.
