Ah yes, been there myself but it was quite some time ago so I don't exactly remember what I did. Did you try putting a scrap piece of fabric on top of the applique where the gunk is and then put a hot iron on it to try to transfer the gunk to the scrap? Perhaps you should wait until there are more responses to your question though. Maybe someone else has the perfect solution for this problem.
