Default Stupid Me! Got brown stuff from iron onto appliqué

So mad at my stupidly tonight!! I was so careful using non stick appliqué sheet to keep fusible gunk off my iron. Don't know how or when but got some on iron then pressed some brown gunk on the front of my appliqué. It is only two small spots so may have to take those pieces off and replace them unless someone can tell me how to get it off. I already cleaned my iron so that is no longer a problem. So, can someone tell me how to get the brown stuff off the front of appliqué... it is not the fusible itself but rather the resulting gunk that gets on one's iron.
Thanks ever so much for help. Sue

Ah yes, been there myself but it was quite some time ago so I don't exactly remember what I did. Did you try putting a scrap piece of fabric on top of the applique where the gunk is and then put a hot iron on it to try to transfer the gunk to the scrap? Perhaps you should wait until there are more responses to your question though. Maybe someone else has the perfect solution for this problem.

Been there, done that. I have tried picking it off with my fingernail and used a toothbrush with a little clear dish soap/water but I ended up replacing the piece. It was white of course and I just couldn't get it clean enough.

I would cut my losses and remake the applique pieces.

I would try KLO suggestion and if that doesn't work, figure out how you can replace that piece of applique. We have ALL had that happen before.

I had that happen, it turned out it was the spray starch I was using. The residue built up on the iron and burnt, leaving brown marks on my white fabric. Now I check my iron periodically and wipe off the residue with a damp cloth while the iron is cool. I haven't yet found a spray starch that doesn't leave it. I put the damaged block on the back of the quilt and used it as a label.

If the gunk is a adhesive I have had some luck with something called "Adhesive Remover". It comes in a small bottle with a felt top to apply it. It is similar to the spot remover made for dry cleanable fabrics. Not expensive and probably worth a try.

I use a dryer sheet. Just iron over it to clean off your iron. The other day I too had some gunk on the front of my quilt. I heated the area with the iron (dryer sheet between the fabric and iron) then gently wiped the fabric with the dryer sheet to get the gunk off. It worked great.

First you need to determine what the brown spot consists of. If it's starch, it should just wash out with soap and water. If it's fusible, you can try a couple of different things, keeping in mind that the piece is pretty much toast anyway, so you might as well try whatever. If you have some acetone nail polish remover, dab some on with a q-tip. I've had success with it. Just make sure to keep the acetone away from any heat source (i.e. your iron) until it evaporates.

Thank you! I couldn't figure out why I'd get brown marks when I was using starch......I'll be more diligent on wiping my iron more often.
