I use a dryer sheet. Just iron over it to clean off your iron. The other day I too had some gunk on the front of my quilt. I heated the area with the iron (dryer sheet between the fabric and iron) then gently wiped the fabric with the dryer sheet to get the gunk off. It worked great.
