maureen cracknell has a herringbone quilt that can be done with varying width strips. it's a QAYG, so the width can be varying--"matching" doesn't have to be an issue. here's her tutorial:

i'm planning on doing one with remnants from a friend who makes renaissance garb--there will be lots of mismatched brocades, jacquards, etc, and i will have a grand time doing it!
