are you using the paper templates or those thicker plastic ones? a friend who's doing one told me she recommended I get the thicker plastic ones though I don't remember why. you just do a running stitch along the back right? then whip stitch them together then baste and quilt?
When my daughter started this project she cut her paper piece hexagons from card stock and basted the fabric on with a running stitch. HOWEVER, I'm using glue as per the directions from the following site:
