May I suggest making the white as a flange around each block. It would be easier than trying to piece a 1/4 or 1/2 inch sashing. those narrow strips are harder to make look straight, imho.

I like this idea! From experience, the thin strips are a nightmare to keep looking straight. I do like the idea of a bit of white, then the black sashing.
