Don't know about an adult dog, but I started training our puppy, now 7 years old, at six weeks that he was not allowed on the furniture. Just never picked him up and held him when I was sitting on furniture. Only held him when I was sitting on the floor. If I was in a chair and he wanted up I would tell him "no". Now husband is another story, he purchased a large stuffed chair, big enough for him and the puppy. That chair stays in the basement and husband with his buddy enjoy it very well. It's the only piece of furniture our dog has ever got up on.
