I read somewhere that the first two digits of the serial number is code for the date of manufacture on Berninas. The first digit indicates the decade and the second the year, beginning with 1 for the 1970's, 2 for 80's, 3 for the 90's. So my machine which begins with 38 was manufactured in 1998, if this is true.
