I would just add a wide dark green border but the top and the bottom needs to be a little wider to give you the size of a lap quilt (no more than 2"-3"). If you wanted to, you can add length by doing a braid as Tartan suggested. You could then follow the design of piecing in the corners and do applique in the corner.
