The R is the reverse button. The disks go in behind the dial. I'm guessing the disks have numbers on them corresponding to the number and stitch patterns on the dial.
Neat machine and it looks like you can set the needle position in the middle. It's a good feature to have.
It should be a good solid machine for you.
