I say use 3-1/2 inch squares. Then do a a 15 or 18 inch block. Do various colors in each block using the color palette your grandson wants. It will all work fine. A design wall will help as will a pattern drawn on graph paper. Label each block so it will be sewn correctly. It is simple sewing. Just keep the design correct. Luann
