With him turning 12, you can let him know you'd love to WORK WITH HIM to figure out a quilt he'd like. I think it's important that he knows you really want to make a quilt he'd love but it's a lot of planning, time and hard work. I know you'll have the right words. I think it's very important that kids realize quilting isn't a quick flash-in-the-pan process, that it's a labor of love and you'd like a piece of both of you in this quilt. Put some decision making on his shoulders too. He can help with the color layout. If he isn't willing to put in the time, you shouldn't be either. Make that known up front. If it doesn't mean enough to him, get him a gift card and let him know you wish it were a special quilt you'd made together. We are all guilty of spoiling our kids too much. Let him know you'll design a quilt with him anytime he's ready. Just my 2 cents worth.

https://www.youpatch.com/ That site will convert a picture into a pixelated pattern.
Not just a pixelated picture but an actual pattern, with yardage requirements and how to assemble.

Thank you!
I found this: https://www.google.com/search?q=pixe...A&ved=0CC8QsAQ
Google pixilate and some come up. Have fun! It looks like you could just put colored squares here and there to make the cover in the picture you linked.

Here is a link to one: https://themodernquiltguild.wordpres...tured-quilt-1/ and if you click on the quilt picture it comes up larger and you can see all the squares. Her squares were 1 1/2'' I think she posted. Maybe all this will help?
Thank you--that is really cool! Have saved the link to my favorites for reference!

I think this may be exactly what I need!! I've never tried to figure out yardage requirements, etc and that's pretty daunting so this will help immensely!!

Here are instructions on how to turn a picture into a pixilated quilt, http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/12/...quilt-pattern/
This is a more detailed tutorial, and doesn't just focus on photos http://m.instructables.com/id/Quilti...ue-pixelation/
Hope these give you some ideas, happy quilting!

Thank you for all the great tips--there is a wealth of knowledge on this board and this info is all very helpful. I will post a picture when the quilt is finished--hopefully in time for Vhristmas!

The Victoria and Albert museum has an online tool to turn photos into pixelated quilts. The service is free but there is a size limit. It does not offer the yardage/cutting instructions that the other link does. You can tell it to use just squares or to use HST.
