With him turning 12, you can let him know you'd love to WORK WITH HIM to figure out a quilt he'd like. I think it's important that he knows you really want to make a quilt he'd love but it's a lot of planning, time and hard work. I know you'll have the right words. I think it's very important that kids realize quilting isn't a quick flash-in-the-pan process, that it's a labor of love and you'd like a piece of both of you in this quilt. Put some decision making on his shoulders too. He can help with the color layout. If he isn't willing to put in the time, you shouldn't be either. Make that known up front. If it doesn't mean enough to him, get him a gift card and let him know you wish it were a special quilt you'd made together. We are all guilty of spoiling our kids too much. Let him know you'll design a quilt with him anytime he's ready. Just my 2 cents worth.

https://www.youpatch.com/ That site will convert a picture into a pixelated pattern.
Not just a pixelated picture but an actual pattern, with yardage requirements and how to assemble.

Google pixilate and some come up. Have fun! It looks like you could just put colored squares here and there to make the cover in the picture you linked.

    Thank you!

Thank you--we live 1200 miles apart but are talking almost daily about what he wants and what I will need from him to make the quilt. Just talked with him to which him a Happy birthday and gave him the task of measuring the width & length of his mattress top and then measure the distance from the top of the mattress down toward the floor so I know how much length to allow for the sides and bottom of the bed. His mother is going to help him do this and they will send me that info. He's very excited about being a part of the process and with today's technology we can do a lot of this together even tho we are not in the same state.

    Thank you AnnaF,

I think this may be exactly what I need!! I've never tried to figure out yardage requirements, etc and that's pretty daunting so this will help immensely!!

Hope these give you some ideas, happy quilting!

The Victoria and Albert museum has an online tool to turn photos into pixelated quilts. The service is free but there is a size limit. It does not offer the yardage/cutting instructions that the other link does. You can tell it to use just squares or to use HST.
