With him turning 12, you can let him know you'd love to WORK WITH HIM to figure out a quilt he'd like. I think it's important that he knows you really want to make a quilt he'd love but it's a lot of planning, time and hard work. I know you'll have the right words. I think it's very important that kids realize quilting isn't a quick flash-in-the-pan process, that it's a labor of love and you'd like a piece of both of you in this quilt. Put some decision making on his shoulders too. He can help with the color layout. If he isn't willing to put in the time, you shouldn't be either. Make that known up front. If it doesn't mean enough to him, get him a gift card and let him know you wish it were a special quilt you'd made together. We are all guilty of spoiling our kids too much. Let him know you'll design a quilt with him anytime he's ready. Just my 2 cents worth.
