T-shirt quilts are very heavy. If you are going to use a dm you may want to use a quilt as you go method.
I just weighed the one I use every day, which is a lap quilt. It has lightweight interfacing and a flannel back, and it weighs only 3.72 lbs. Not heavy at all. I used W&N batting with it.
