They are not hard to clean at all, I wipe mine out every few days and there is usually a tray underneath that can be removed. I know that ammonia is wonderful, you can actually put paper towels on the bottom and spray ammonia on it and leave it overnight. It will soften all yucky spots and then wash it off. Ammonia burns so wear gloves.
