If I were to do one, I like your idea of the fusible heat & bond only around the edges so that you can remove the jelly roll strips behind it once it's attached. I would want it to not be raw edge, so I would cut the image 1/4 inch larger all the way around it, then press in the quarter inch, using the heat & bond to hold it down. Then you could just straight stitch very close to the edge when attaching to quilt top. Just my thoughts, don't know what kind of stitch you wanted to applique it down with. It is doable and you can do it! LOL! Easy for me to say huh!
