Default Question about quilting with a silhouette

I saw a thread on here awhile ago where several of you made a quilt that had one or more silhouettes on it. I loved them all and want to do one like that. I've made a Jelly Roll Race quilt and want to put a silhouette picture on top. Can anyone tell me what is the best way to attach it?

Mine will be only one image which will be pretty large (to take up about a yard 1/2 of fabric). I'm hoping to machine applique it down but don't want the whole image to have fusible on it and be stiff. I'm thinking I can make it so that the fusible (Heat & Bond lite) will only be added along the edge and then I can cut the part of the top that will be behind the silhouette out from behind it to avoid having all those seams behind my image.

Does anyone know if this is doable this way? Or is there a better way to do this? I appreciate any and all thoughts. I also think I plan to echo quilt inside the image when I get to the quilting point. Unless there is a better way. I know I need help, don't I???

If I were to do one, I like your idea of the fusible heat & bond only around the edges so that you can remove the jelly roll strips behind it once it's attached. I would want it to not be raw edge, so I would cut the image 1/4 inch larger all the way around it, then press in the quarter inch, using the heat & bond to hold it down. Then you could just straight stitch very close to the edge when attaching to quilt top. Just my thoughts, don't know what kind of stitch you wanted to applique it down with. It is doable and you can do it! LOL! Easy for me to say huh!

I was taught to spray starch into a cup, use a paint brush and iron the 1/4" down that way. After it is ironed down, then applique it the way you desire. That way the edges would not be stiff in any way from the heat & bond. Your choice.

The method of applique you are describing is called "windowing" your shape. You can stitch down your shape and remove the fabric behind it or if isn't too thick you can leave it.

I was taught to use Heat n Bond Lite. Trace the picture onto the paper side of the Heat n Bond Lite. Then you can cut out the center...leave about a 1/4" or 1/2" of the H & B, iron it to the wrong side of the fabric and you're in business. Have fun! I am in no way connected to anyone having anything to do with Heat n Bond.

As stated above, many methods of dealing with applique silhouettes. Try to choose one that will be easiest for you to do. Good Luck.
