Huh... I mostly use cones, so my thread is sitting in a stand behind the machine rather than on the machine's spool pins so I rarely open it up. I think I usually only open the lid on mine to wind a bobbin, or if I need to look at the stitch pattern list or pop in a cam (which is almost never, I don't use a lot of stitches besides straight & zig-zag normally). Never really thought about that - it probably would bug me to have it open while sewing all the time too.

The lid being open certainly ruins the lines of the machine. Like driving around with your hood up!
