Believe it or not, his is because the term vibrate actually means to move back and forth.... Nowadays we tend to thing of vibrating in the context of electronics, which "vibrate" at high speed, but originally it simply referred to a type of motion.

The earlier ones are called Transverse shuttle, because the term "Transverse" indicates movement from side to side perpendicular to the line of motion
