if you normally use a 2 1/2 inch binding, make it 2 1/4 instead. Now are you folding the binding over the front? almost sounds like that when you are talking about the star points. If the star points are right at the raw edge of the quilt you will have to bite the bullet and sew binding on and not worry about the points being in the seam a bit. not much to do about it.
