You push the needle up/down button the needle will stay down, now push up/down, and the needle will come up with the bobbin thread, that is how my Janome 6600p, and 1600p works, hope this helped.

Question - the cutter leaves the bobbin thread just long enough to peek out from the throat plate. How do you "grab" the bobbin thread, either before inserting the quilt under the needle or after, to bring the bobbin thread to the top before sewing? If I don't do that, the thread gets all jammed.
