My sister got grandma's prized pincushion, that was made one Christmas, by a lady in her quilting circle. They each made very ornate, sculptured, pincushions on little wood bases. Grandma's was a doll covered with a green velvet dress decorated with silk, velvet ribbons, beads, gimp, lace, netting and I don't know what all, with a yarn Gibson girl hairstyle, embroidered face, and feathered fancy hat. Whomever made hers, put one hand in a skirt pocket, and the other 'behind' a bouquet, only later did I figure out that she avoided making tiny little hands and I didn't blame her! I loved looking at "the pretty lady". Grandma never let us touch it, so it is just a little faded, but perfect. Grandma said they worked all year on their dolls and keeping the ideas secret from each other was half the fun. You can google "Victorian pincushion Dolls" to get an idea. Not only practical, but your granddaughters can envy each other over ownership too! Lol! (I am not the oldest girl, so it is hers by right. )
