Funny can opener story to lighten your heart during your search.
When DH and I set up housekeeping together I hand a normal can opener from The local "buy it cheap" store. It soon wore out, so I went a bought another inexpensive one. It lasted less than a month, so I went and bought a more expensive one thinking the less expensive one was made of cheap materials. The second one was trash in about six weeks! I next tried one of those little battery operated ones that takes the whole top off of the can, did not like it much, and when I cut myself trying to use a spatula to clean out the rest of the tomato paste, it also joined the others in the trash. Next I tried an expensive electric one. Got the best I could afford, and it was trash within a week! Now, getting really disgusted by the low quality of can openers I was finding, I acquired an extra one my sister had had for years that was still nice and sharp. You can just imagine my chagrin when it was up useable in less than two weeks?! Now, I am not usually this hard on things, so I started wondering if putting them (non-electric ones) through the dishwasher was the problem, so I again bought a mid-price manual can opener, carefully stored it, hand washed it, and treated it like fine china, and just "knew" I could make this one last longer by doing so. Wrong! Less than three weeks later it was toast! I began to wonder if the gremlins were doing this (since nothing else made any sense) and began to watch the can opener for anything that might be making this happen. Imagine my complete surprise when I finally noticed the fact that I had fallen into the habit of letting DH open cans for me as I cooked, and finally figured out that the problem was him! My wonderful was DH doing them in! He is a very strong man, and a lefty. He was actually twisting them out of alignment just trying to get them to work in the "wrong" hand! We had a great laugh, and I forever banned him from using my can openers! Haven't had to buy anew one since. Lol!
