What a great suggestion! Could also easily be done as raw edge applique using Heat&Bond Lite and your drawing. If you used batiks you could do it as one complete piece and just fuse it and stitch around the outside edge. You could fussy cut it from a section of a batik fat quarter to get several shaded colors and it would sure look like a fall leaf as its turning colors.
