I prefer the first one too. The darker fabric frames the squares beautifully. In the second one, the medium fabric is too similar to the squares and seems to suck the life out of them.

I totally agree with this one, unless you want to make it shabby chic. In that case, I would use the lighter blue as the stop border, then the other blue paisley or white (background) as the final larger border.
