Many years ago I was married to a "macho" control freak. Notice the word "was". I remember asking him once for $5 for a haircut (this was back in the 70's) and he said no, not because he didn't have the money, just because it was his way of showing me he was in control. I had 3 children at the time and did not work. My parents would help me out financially for my personal stuff. After 10 years of mental abuse, I hit the road with my two girls and one-year old son. So, with my DH today, I do not ask permission or consult him to buy anything (unless it is a major purchase)and we keep separate accounts. Yea, he makes comments about all the fabric in my sewing room, but I just ignore him. His favorite phrase is "Oh, just what we need, more fabric". Usually, I keep my stash in the trunk and I bring it in when he is not around so I don't have to explain, not that it really matters anyway. We pay our bills together and I allow myself so much "play" money every month.

I must say though, that my husband was the one that encouraged me to buy my Bernina about 7 years ago. He went online and at that time they had a no interest deal so he told me to go for it.
