This will be my first completely handmade project, which will mean I will have to learn how to appliqué also!!!!!
Once you have a Dresden that will lay flat, you can either use a little fusable iron on tape on the points, or Elmer's glue to hold the Dresden to the background. Both methods have worked for me but the Elmer's is quicker for me, since I have figured out how to dry it with the iron and some paper towels to protect everything. If you use Elmer's it will probably show through until you wash it, so don't panic, and do not use Elmer's on a quilt that will not be washed before gifting or using.
