You want something that doesn't stay tacky or every piece of lint and thread will stick to the back of the ruler.
I bought the transparent tape. I works great, the sticky part sticks to the ruler and it stays put. Lots of everyday stuff works as good as some of the more expensive stuff. I just need more imagination.
