Default Question about a product

I watched Fons and Porter on our local PBS and in their hints section they showed a product that you buy at a hardware store. They said you spray it on the backs of your templates and it prevents slipping.

Does anyone know what that product is called and if it works? My worry would be that it would leave a film that would change color over time. Anyone done this hint with their templates?

I must have missed that yesterday. Are you talking about plastic templates for applique?? I would think it would make the back sticky.

Try the transparent first aid tape. It is excellent for the back of rulers and templates. I have it on all mine. Nexcare and Curad are two brands I have used.

It must be a repositional type glue like you find on the back of Post Its. I always worry about that stuff transferring to places I don't want it. The problems with glue is that it takes a long time before it breaksdown into something bad. So I try to avoid it.

You want something that doesn't stay tacky or every piece of lint and thread will stick to the back of the ruler.

I've been having good luck lately with a wide rubber band lengthwise around my ruler for cutting strips. It is outside the width line and just about the thickness of the folded fabric I am cutting.
I agree that even though "experts" are recommending it, I wouldn't trust a hardware store product against my quilt.

I bought a 12 foot roll of sticky backed 150 grit sandpaper from Amazon. I cut small squares from it, peeled the paper backing off, and stuck several pieces to my rulers and one on the smaller templates. Works like a charm and does not harm the fabric.

I bought a package of Steady Betty strips for $2 or $3. The strips are pre-cut into 1/4" pieces. I cut one strip into squares and tacked them in strategic places on my rulers and templates.

If you still want the product mentioned on F&P, I did a brief Google search and found both temporary adhesive spray and sticky-backed sandpaper dots mentioned, both of which you should be able to find at a hardware store.

I bought the transparent tape. I works great, the sticky part sticks to the ruler and it stays put. Lots of everyday stuff works as good as some of the more expensive stuff. I just need more imagination.

I like the tape because the ruler doesn't slip but it can still be moved on the fabric without picking it up. I have the tape on my Slidelock safety ruler too. I can't have too much safety when it comes to using a rotary cutter.
