You can make these for dogs, too. Some dogs are very afraid of thunder storms, and can be soothed with a weighted vest.
I'm not sure about the rice and beans. It seems like even 20 minutes in water would make the soggy.
I made a couple thundershirts for my dog that is afraid of storms. They work really well and don't need any weight. They just need to be snug. Velcro works great.
