Need to buy weighted blanket for 13 year old granddaughter ASAP . If it works I will make her a second one. Was wondering if anyone can recommend what I should be looking for

There are a lot of instructions online to make them MUCH less expensively than buying one.

Did they give you recommendations about size and weight? Here's some information that might be helpful:

I would think you could wash the ones made with rice or beans if you washed it quickly and dried it outdoors in the sun.

You can make these for dogs, too. Some dogs are very afraid of thunder storms, and can be soothed with a weighted vest.

i would make tubes not squares, for the blanket with the foot zipped closed.
then i would make rip stop nylon tubes to fill with the poly beads and sew then closed.
slip your tubes in and zip closed. do not try to wash rice or beans tube!!!
i bought the poly beads from a doll making site years ago. they are also used for bean bags. you can remove the tubs for washing the blanket. use the golf club inserts for golf bags to fill the tubs. a twin size is for one person.

I'm not sure about the rice and beans. It seems like even 20 minutes in water would make the soggy.

I made a couple thundershirts for my dog that is afraid of storms. They work really well and don't need any weight. They just need to be snug. Velcro works great.

Rob Appell at Man Sewing made one of these a little while back. He filled his with poly pellets & gave a lot of good information & tips on his tutorial.

They are not hard to put together. I made a few for The Arc here. I did the attached front and back, then made 4" tubes from top to bottom. They added the beads, according to weight needed and finished the rows. You can make a slip cover to put it in that can be removed to wash.
