I use a 6ft straight edge that is 2 1/2 inch wide bought at Lowes. I mark the strip down each side and then cut the strip. This straight edge is wonderful for marking straight lines for quilting. I have the 4 and 6 ft one. $8 and $12. Bright yellow metal exactly 2 1/2 " wide.
Not sure what a hardware store is called in the UK but it is where tools (man store) are sold. Personally it is my favorite place to shop. Yes, a metal straight edge is an awesome tool to have for quilting!!. Here's a picture of one, so you know what to look for because it probably has a different name in the UK. Here they do come in different lengths.
