I'm not sure if this is what you're wanting, but with it being a baby shower, I thought it might be a nice gift anyway. That said, this is just something I've been thinking about and don't even know if it would work.
I've thought of making a baby bonnet by using a patchwork strip of 1inch wide x 2inch pieces?? to decorate the front over the head.
Sew it to a wider strip of white fabric for the back and quilt before turning under at the side edges.
Turn under a wider hem at the back, thread with a ribbon and pull up the gathers with a bow.
Bind the front to cover the raw edges and add ribbons at the lower bottom edge.
Like I said, this is just a rough idea, but if anyone has made one at some time I would love to hear about it.
