I'm in the DFW area. About 1/2 of them still sell fabric, mostly in the burbs.
I found a fabric at Walmart that I loved (a stripe) and bought enough to make a bed quilt. It's not hard to work with, but it doesn't feed very nice. It's not smooth and soft like good fabric. I still like the way it looks, but wouldn't purchase it again because of the feel. Even after it's washed and ironed, it still feels "rough".
